Zagreb Cathedral

Current visitor and restoration information for Kaptol's landmark church.

Zagreb Cathedral is one of the city’s defining landmarks and the main church of the Archdiocese of Zagreb. It dominates the Kaptol skyline and sits only a few minutes from Dolac Market and Ban Josip Jelačić Square.

Current restoration status: the cathedral suffered major earthquake damage in 2020. It reopened in December 2025, but restoration and interior conservation work are still continuing in 2026. If entering the cathedral matters to your visit, check the latest official information shortly before you go.

Is it open? Yes, but restoration work continues and access conditions can change

Is Zagreb Cathedral open in 2026?

Yes. According to the Archdiocese of Zagreb, the cathedral reopened on Christmas Eve 2025 after being closed following earthquake damage. Structural restoration and interior work continue while the building is in use.

As of late September 2026, conservation work is still taking place inside the cathedral, including reconstruction of late-19th-century decorative painting. Conditions may change as work progresses.

For the latest restoration information, check the Archdiocese of Zagreb before your visit.

Why was Zagreb Cathedral closed?

The cathedral was heavily damaged by the Zagreb earthquake of 22 March 2020 and sustained further damage during the earthquakes of late December 2020. The closure that followed allowed extensive structural stabilization and restoration work.

What can you see around the Cathedral?

Even if interior access is limited during restoration, the Kaptol area remains worth including in a central Zagreb route. The cathedral sits beside the historic ecclesiastical centre of the city and connects naturally with Dolac Market and the route toward Upper Town.

How to visit Zagreb Cathedral

The easiest approach is on foot from Ban Josip Jelačić Square. Walk toward Dolac Market, then continue into Kaptol.

From the cathedral, you can continue toward Tkalčićeva Street and then climb toward the Stone Gate and Upper Town.

What should you wear?

This is an active Catholic cathedral, not only a tourist attraction. Dress respectfully and keep noise low, especially during Mass, prayer or other services.

Can you visit during Mass?

Services take priority over sightseeing. If a liturgy is taking place, avoid moving around unnecessarily or treating the interior as a photo stop.
